Last Months Today The gap between holidays has a few modes: frolicking to some deserved time off; drifting, not used to so much time; and mulling over what’s happened and what’s to come. Unsurprisingly, I hang in the last camp, and what I’ve been doing steadily are things I’m not naturally good at. I can devastate a room within ten minutes of entering. If a piece of paper falls on the floor, I will step over it for days. But after staring at the same mangles for two years, Jenga’d around me and in my head, I decided to clean my damn house. I read a lot of Marie Kondo, a bona fide pixie who cares enough for the both of us and encourages one to keep only what “sparks joy.” With that mantra not too cute, I took days off, found places that buy used, restocked the lobby with free shit, and tallied who’d be up for a giveaway. Eleven trash bags and six boxes later, I am not done as I’ve gaily escaped to my mom’s. But my home is a masterpiece in progress, so I’ll tell you how much immediate joy I sparked… almost none? With the exception of regular cleaning, I am good at doing what I’m supposed to do; I have a job, a pursuit, and responsibilities that I swing on the daily. I thought that massively discarding and sorting would put a bow on it before the Next Big Thing, but I’ve been yanking at the edges of the box I’m wrapped in. Sitting in bed, cat at my feet, flanked by a rose and slices of cold ham—I am a very lucky person if I just stop and describe it. When I burst into tears on the third day of cleaning, my friend took me out for cookie dough and ice cream. I got a call I wasn’t expecting anymore. I’ve gotten help up the wazoo even while the holidays are back. I literally have more space and a more honed sense towards happiness. Whatever that is, it feels really nice. So if you’re tidying up for the new year like I am still, you can pause at any point and think of what made you proud this year. Or curl up in that chair a little longer. We’re just masterpiecing it all together.
